He was born in Edo in 1836 as the son of a samurai. He went to the Netherlands to study modern naval science and shipbuilding. During the Boshin War, he led the Tokugawa shogunate's navy to fight for his beliefs. He went to Hokkaido and fought against the new Meiji government at Goryokaku in Hakodate. After losing the battle, he was put in prison, but many people admired his high intelligence and talents. Leaders of the Meiji government, like Kuroda Kiyotaka, saved his life so he could help build modern Japan. Later, he worked hard as a diplomat and government minister to develop Hokkaido and improve Japan's education and technology. He also helped found the Tokyo University of Agriculture to support Japan's farming and industry...

He was born in 1867 in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. As a young man, he saw women working very hard at hand looms and wanted to help them. In 1890, he invented a wooden hand loom that was much easier and faster to use. Later, in 1896, he developed Japan's first power loom driven by an engine. He invented an automatic loom that stopped immediately if a thread broke, preventing defective cloth. This idea of machines stopping automatically when a problem occurs became known as Jidoka , a core concept of modern manufacturing. A famous British textile company bought the patent for his automatic loom in 1929. His son used the funds from this patent to establish Toyota Motor Corporation.
