Kitagawa Utamaro was a famous ukiyo-e artist in the Edo period.
He is known as one of the greatest masters of Japanese woodblock prints.
He was especially famous for his bijin-ga, pictures of beautiful women.
He drew women working in tea shops, towns, and the entertainment quarters of Edo.
Utamaro created a new style called okubi-e (close-up portraits).
Instead of drawing the whole body, he zoomed in on the women's faces and shoulders.
His close-up portraits captured deep emotions and subtle facial expressions.
People could easily understand how the women felt just by looking at their eyes and gentle smiles.
He worked closely with Tsutaya Juzaburo, a brilliant Edo publisher.
Tsutaya recognized Utamaro's talent and helped publish many of his best masterpieces.
His masterpieces include Three Beauties of the Present Day.
These prints became hugely popular among ordinary people in Edo.
Later in life, he got into trouble with the Tokugawa shogunate.
He drew historical figures like Toyotomi Hideyoshi, which broke government censorship rules.
His art traveled across the ocean and strongly influenced European painters.
French Impressionist artists like Claude Monet admired his delicate lines and unique compositions.
