  1. Yamanaka Shinya is a famous Japanese scientist.  He was born in Osaka in 1962.

  2. He first trained to become an orthopedic doctor(整形外科医).  He wanted to help injured patients, but he decided to become a researcher to cure difficult diseases.

  3. In 2006, he succeeded in creating iPS cells from mouse skin cells.  Just one year later, in 2007, his team made human iPS cells.

  4. "iPS cells" stands for induced pluripotent stem cells(誘導多能性幹細胞。).  They are special "master cells" created by adding four specific genes(遺伝子) into ordinary body cells.

  5. iPS cells can grow into almost any type of cell in our body.  They can turn into heart, nerve, retina, liver, or muscle cells.

  6. He won the Nobel Prize in Physiology(生理学) or Medicine in 2012.  He received the prize together with British scientist John B. Gurdon.

  7. iPS cell technology opens the door to regenerative medicine(再生医療).  Scientists hope to replace damaged organs or tissues using cells grown from iPS cells.

  8. They are also very useful for testing new medicines.  Doctors can test whether a drug works safely on human cells in a lab dish before giving it to patients.

  9. Yamanaka named them with a lowercase "i" (iPS cells).  He got the idea from popular gadgets like the "iPod," hoping the technology would become widely used and familiar to people.
